Atenite is a synthetic biomineral first developed in 2067, during the first stages of Aten7’s construction. Its properties were originally developed to shield the early station - and still do so today - but those same properties have made Atenite popular for a variety of uses, mostly stemming from privacy concerns.

Players will need to plan for the ramifications of the isolation generated by Atenite, especially its effect on telepresence and fog-of-war situations. Various derivatives are available to use as building materials and other needs.

During the first phase of the construction of Aten7, the station known as StarPath was positioned in geosynchronous orbit over the Pacific Ocean to provide a facility for the cable printers. This floating factory required heavy shielding due to the fragile biological systems the printers ran on; for this, Atenite, or Mychield as it was originally known, was developed.

By the time the first elevator cable was lowered to Earth, Atenite was already performing its primary purpose. Housing the entire complex in overlapping layers of Atenite over ten metres thick.

Atenite provides effective shielding from both micrometeorites and radiation, such as cosmic rays and solar emissions. It does this by scattering the radiation very effectively, so effectively, in fact, that even the first version of Atenite blocked all transmissions, such as radio waves and other parts of the spectrum. The structure of Atenite was also effective as a physical shield, but where it shines is the scattering, effectively making anything covered by the mineral invisible to outside eyes.

Today, there are over 60 Atenite derivatives, many of which have been specifically created to improve security and privacy capabilities. Atenite is most commonplace on Aten7, as over 79% of the artificial asteroid is composed of various forms of the mineral. 

The controversial side effect of all this is that the vast majority of Aten7 is unable to be scanned for activity, creating a haven for those who wish to hide their actions. Parts of the asteroid have not been explored in over 50 years, leaving thousands of cubic kilometres of ‘well, anything could be happening’.

The original StarPath station and its shielding have long since been removed, with no place for it among the 32 current elevator cables that make up The Line. It can be found in the Historical Zone, Mid 6, opposite the ZeroG.

The manufacture of Atenite has changed little since its inception, at least in most cases. A large bag is deployed in zero gravity conditions, such as the space station, with the shape defined by where it is used. The bag is filled with a mixture of regolith (10-25%), hot gases, a mix of nutrients and the spores of a genetically modified fungus. Over a period - ranging from a week back in 2065 to a mere 20 hours today - a mycelial network floods the space inside the bag, filling it with a dense array of hyphae.

These hyphae soak up minerals and form a coating, which, upon death, creates a translucent matrix akin to a tangle of optical fibres, the channels of which form random paths. The Atenite is also doped with elements such as Boron to increase absorption, and in modern cases, it has been developed to contain complex Fractal Faradays, a type of Faraday cage built into the substrate.

Atenite is named after Aten7, whose name is derived from the Aten asteroids that have been harvested to help build Aten7. It is produced in a number of facilities located Beltside, in order to avoid ‘mining’ the mineral from Aten7 itself, something the locals don’t take kindly to.

Note : It is banned in many nations, with the last count being 845, up from 802 in 2116.

Players will be unable to scan for anything beyond 1.5m of standard Atenite; both radiation and acoustic techniques are foiled. This means that once outside a populated area, players are quickly isolated from any communication with home, leaving telepresence useless and Link and Pools unavailable.

Any party Companions must be housed in a physical body, which risks permadeath, or as a Shadow (aka Echo). Hives are only functional when within range, 

Atenite is fairly easy to destroy with kinetic attack, requiring a good bashing but nothing extraordinary :

• Hardness: 4.9 Mohs
• Toughness: 3.15 MPa·m^0.5
• Compressive Strength: 770 MPa

It is highly resistant to energy weapons, requiring varying but extreme power levels : 

• Energy Weapon Resistance Rating: 88-99.97%

• Specific Heat Capacity: 1.125 J/g·°C
• Thermal Conductivity: 3.25 W/m·K
• Melting Point: 2004 °C
• Radiation Resistance: High
